Westport Island Shellfish Committee Meeting

August 5, 2008

Meeting Minutes

 

 

Present:  David Besecker, Joe Donahue, Lincoln Richardson, Eugene Fairfield, Donna Curry, Forest Smith, Clem Sledge

 

 

Approval of minutes from previous meeting: Minutes from previous meeting were approved by committee members.

 

 

Water Sampling Squam Creek:  Joe reported that there has been no further testing of Squam Creek since the testing that Joe and DMR did earlier in the summer. We will not be able to escalate the testing process. We need to continue testing and try to lower our mean score.

 

 

Warden’s Report: There was no activity to report from wardens. Clem is pending.

 

 

New Committee Member: Eugene Fairfield is now officially an alternate member of the Shellfish Committee.  Welcome, Eugene!

 

 

Fowles Cove Surveying: The Committee will survey Fowles Cove to check on brushing conducted last year. The survey is scheduled for Saturday, September 6th at 4 PM.  Joe will get boxes and stakes to set survey marks. Lincoln will notify Brenda to include it in her weekly newspaper updates in order to encourage other Westport Island residents to participate.

 

 

Shellfish Resource Mapping Project: The Maine Department of Marine Resources is interested in finding out the variety of species that we have around the island.  At our next meeting we will address the request from Michelle Mason, Shellfish Program Coordinator (see attached letter).

The shellfish species they are interested in mapping include the following:

  • Soft-shell clam
  • Blue mussel
  • European oyster
  • American oyster
  • Hard clam (quahog)
  • Atlantic surf clam
  • Razor clam
  • Sea scallop

 

 

Next meeting: The next meeting will be held on September 9, 2008, when the following item will be part of the agenda:
