Westport Island Shellfish Committee Meeting

Minutes 9 January 07

 

 

Present: Dave Bertran, Clem Sledge, Lincoln Richardson, Jerry Bodmer, Donna Curry, and Forest Smith

 

 

Approval of Minutes: Minutes of November meeting were approved.

 

 

Warden’s Report: Lincoln had no action to report for the month.

 

 

Shellfish Ordinance: The state has approved our request to modify our shellfish ordinance to read: “No person holding a Commercial State of Maine Shellfish License will be permitted to purchase a Recreational Shellfish License on Westport Island”. The suggested change must now go to the board of selectman and then to the town for approval. Once this is done, it will have to be submitted to the state for its records. Dave will put together the process paperwork to present the shellfish ordinance modification to the board of selectmen.

Action item: Dave to work on paperwork for submitting shellfish ordinance

 

 

Reinforcement of Ordinance Change: The committee would like clarification on how to reinforce the change in the ordinance to exclude non-residents holding state shellfish license from seeking recreational license. This could be a potential issue for wardens. The committee will seek Ron’s advice but believe that one solution may be to set up a procedure with the town office to do background checks (for shellfish licenses) on non-residents seeking recreational licenses.

 

 

2006 Report: Committee worked on preparing the state’s 2006 report. Donna will enter the data into the final report once all documentation is received. The following action items must be completed before report can be finalized:

Donna to type in all available data and share with rest of committee

Joe and Lincoln to submit necessary data to Donna well before February meeting

Dave to get necessary information regarding budget items from Linda

Clem to send data on transplant activities to Donna well before February meeting

 

 

Other items – Question about Number of Recreational Licenses Allowed and/or Converted: The committee discussed the ordinance allowing non-residents to buy resident recreational licenses if they have not all been sold by the cut-off date. The committee will ask Ron’s advice at the next meeting.

 

 

Other items – Wardens for 2007: Lincoln and Joe were invited to continue to serve as shellfish wardens. Lincoln, who was present, stated that he is willing to serve again. Action items: Lincoln and Joe need to complete the application for warden and bring it to the February meeting for signature by a town official before submitting to the state for final approval.

 

 

Next Meeting:  The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 5th, starting at 6:00 PM. at the town office.
